Gold Coast Supanova 2020

A very costume heavy cosplay. I haven’t cut my hair since 2016 so I felt it appropriate that I do a cosplay with long hair.

Very limited reference photos for this specific costume so I just worked with what I had and could find!

Working with circles and ovals in fabric was difficult and confusing. But managed to get this completed. It involved a lot of beading and pattern making that I’m very new to.

This shoulder piece is made of an aluminium sheet, thin EVA foam for thickness and black vinyl to look like leather.
The ‘orbs’ are made with resin and thin craft foam for the gold details. The ‘sun’ is acrylic sheets painted in clear orange with EVA foam spikes on the supports.
The cape is attached with velcro for easy removal and transport. (All still had to fit inside a suitcase)

I struggled a bit with reference photos for this cosplay so I kind of made up this part. The ‘belt’ is detailed with gold fabric paint and beads. This task was also very new to me. (Ignore the part at the top that I leant on and smudged, in true cosplay nature I finished this hours before the con began)

Ma’Tok Staff Weapon

Get Into Gate- October 2019

Each large piece started as a giant chunk of foam, they were carved down with a stanley knife, sand paper and a belt sander.

This T-Joint was permanently glued into place so that the base would be strong enough to hold the weight of the whole staff.

Grooves were cut out to fit the bent PVC into place. (PVC was filled with sand and heated up so they would bend easily around a template)

I predrew the indented lines on the main blaster to be as accurate as possible to the reference material.

Full scale length of the whole staff before adding the base foam. I since shortened the length of the top part as it was well over 2.2m long at this stage.

I cut in half the parts with the PVC pipe that ran through to carve out space for it as ‘drilling’ out a hole was too difficult and dangerous with this material. Reglued together with contact glue and gaps filled with a gap filler.

Close up of the mechanical parts before painting. These were just made up of random bits and pieces found around the place.
